What did you say???

As my hounds are living longer than most. I am starting to see medical conditions that I never before thought I'd have to deal with. Zowie is slowly going blind. She sees shadows and sometimes gets confused. But for being almost 16 and in very good shape otherwise. She still gets a thrill from a short jaunt around the yard. Willow (shown in the picture) has gone deaf in her right ear. Her left one seems to be still working. She is almost 15 and in excellent health. The two brothers Gordie and Sully just turned 9 and are doing very well. Jenny is 7 and just as sweet as ever. Wisper is also seven. This is something I find very hard to believe. She was just 18 months old when we adopted her. She is as shy as they come. Even after all these years with us. She's still leary of people. Oh, she trusts the family members. But still prefers to hang back and observe instead of getting involved. Unless it's running. That is her all time most favorite thing to do. Somehow, her nails got infected in her front feet. Causing them to fall off. I got the infection under control and stimulated her immune system and she seems to be back to her old self. Her nails haven't grown back. But she doesn't need them to be happy. Eva, the most spoiled greyhound in the entire world. Turned 7 this year. Honestly, I don't know what I'd do without her. Since the first time I saw her, she's been my little girl. Healthy as a horse!!!! Then there's zoe the beagle. She has liver issues but they're under control. She turned 9 this year. Vinny is 2 and healthy and happy as a pig in shit. Buddha will be four next June. He's recovered from his allergies. Put on some weight and looks good. He sheds like it's going out of style. That tells me his body is still detoxing since being put on the raw diet. So the hounds are well. Lets hope they stay that way for a long, long, long time.

The Bullie and the Greyhound

The greyhound (Willow) doesn't like the Bullie (Buddha) all that much. Oh, she'll walk by him and even run with him outside. But if he comes near her when she's lying down she going to tell him off. He just jumps back and looks at her. A while later Willow will be going to get a drink or take a walk outside. That's when Buddha pays her back for being nasty. He takes off, running under her. Making her back legs come off the ground. Or he'll get under her and walk the way she's walking making her bounce off of him like a Po go stick. It is actually comical to see. Now, I'm not sure he enjoys driving her nuts or if it's just a bullie thing. I have allot to learn about the English bull terrier. Willow is the last hold out. All the other hounds have accepted that he's here to stay and that they need to deal with him. Even the Beagle plays with Buddha. Zoe (beagle) usually get the better of him. It's hilarious to see a 55 pound bull terrier backdown from a 20 pound old lady Beagle.

Buddha Update

Buddha is fitting in quite nicely. He's learning what he can and cannot get away with. Vinny is finally learning that there is more than enough room for Buddha and him. The biggest thing I need to get under control is Buddhas jumping on people issue. Sometimes he is great and other times he just wants to jump, jump, jump. He has gained some weight an his allergies have pretty much gone away. All this just by changing his diet and putting him on multivitamins.

In order to release some of his energy. I'm thinking of enrolling him in agility lessons. He loves to run almost as much as the greyhounds do. I think his favorite thing is running as fast as he can and then body slamming an unsuspecting greyhound. Vinny has been body slammed a few time and he seem to enjoy it.

We went to a Bull Terrier gathering last Sunday. Got to meet several other bullies. Their owners are just as whacked as greyhound owners. We did learn some things we didn't know.

20-YEAR-OLD DACHSHUND NAMED NEW YORK’S OLDEST DOG

Paco Sosa, a Manhattan dachshund who turned 20 this past Saturday, is believed to be New York’s most senior canine citizen. In human years, that’s 140.

The world record holder was wire-haired dachshund Chanel, who died on August 28 in New York’s Long Island, at age 21.

Paco exercises regularly and eats organic poultry, fish and fruit; and in good weather he can be seen in Central Park with his human companion, filmmaker and venture capitalist Bernadine Santistevan. The dog has also responded extremely well to acupuncture and physical therapy utilizing Eastern healing techniques.

Paco’s acupuncturist, Dr. Jeffrey Levy, agrees that alternative therapies have helped extend the dog’s life. “When I met Paco in 2008, he had some severe orthopedic issues,” recalled Dr. Levy. Dr. Levy used acupuncture to facilitate Paco’s mobility and to alleviate pain. The dog’s musculoskeletal issues have since dramatically improved.

AGNESS — Pete Pollard walked up the remote trail through the Lower Rogue River Canyon with the melancholy of a man who knows his one missed oar-stroke killed his daughter’s dog.

The day before, the 57-year-old Talent man miss-rowed while rafting the wild Rogue’s Blossom Bar, pitching himself, two others and two canines into the river for a perilous bounce downstream.

All were rescued within minutes of the accident — except for Ali, a 15-pound Boston terrier. Now, a full day later, it was time to recover the last victim.

“I was looking in the eddies for his body,” Pollard says.

Then a twig snapped just off the trail. And another. “Oh, geez,” Pollard thought. “Now I gotta deal with a bear.”

But out of the bushes popped Ali, still sporting his blue life vest.

Volunteers at TJO think they do everything they can...

There was an interesting war of words happening on craigslist last week. Seems someone was calling TJO ( Thomas J Oconnor ) shelter murders. Now I happen to agree with them. They kill as many pit bulls as they can. They do nothing to rehabilitate the troubled pits. The person(s) that were pro TJO used the same old excuses. Not enough money, volunteers, or resources. I pointed out to this person(s) That if I ran TJO I would get in touch with Tufts University. I would try to get them to add 360 hours of spaying and neutering to their veterinarian program in order to receive a diploma. And that that volunteering had to be done at a shelter. I would also ask the vet supply companies to donate supplies need to spay and neuter. If this could be arranged I would be offering spay and neuters at cost. Whatever that was.

I also pointed out that if all the people who kept crying about lack of. Called their reps in Boston and demanded a change in breeding laws. Something like. If you are a breeder you need to register and get a license. That would cost $500.00 per year. If you are caught breeding without a license. It's a mandatory $5000.00 fine or 1 year in jail. No if ands or buts. If you are breeding pit bulls it's $1000.00 per year for a license. This would curb allot of the problem in my mind. At leaset it's pro active and maybe just maybe the attitude of killing would stop.
